Once again Boss Hog catches some great candids before and after the game. This time he shot all in film (gasp!)
I like to win!
Lisa Lawless and Deadly Nightshade of the Oakland Outlaws.
On April 26th, the Oakland Outlaws beat San Francisco ShEvil Dead 103 to 66! The game was action packed, with great plays on both sides. The Outlaws maintained a defense that was effective even with the near constant presence of one skater in the penalty box for most of the game. Yours Truly racked up too many of those penalties for a new record of 4 visits to the box. This was my last game as B.A.D.Girl and I'm thankful to the whole league for making it such an enjoyable time!
Matt Mills caught some great candid and action shots of the game. Before every bout skaters get numbers sharpied on our arms (that's how we roll) to make it easier for the refs to send us to the box. I'm getting numbered by Jennacologist, and Deadly Nightshade is putting on lipstick behind me. The rest of the team is listening to the captain giving us some pre-game instructions. I love the combination of strategy talk plus makeup! Only in Roller Derby!
Tickets are on sale now for the April 26th Bay Area Derby Girls second bout of the season. This time we're back in Oakland at the Dry Ice Arena. Tickets are for sale only online, and they will sell out! Buy them now. This will be your last chance to see me skating with the Bay Area Derby Girls before my move to Seattle! The after party is guaranteed to rock.
I'm a firm believer that most anything is an excuse to celebrate. This month I've got two good reasons - my birthday, and my last month in San Francisco before heading back to cold, grey Seattle. Between work and derby, my schedule gets full pretty quick. To make planning easier on all of us, I'm making my availability public. Want to go out for drinks, see that movie we always said we'd watch, sing karaoke, get in some rockband time? Check my calendar and invite me!
A couple weeks ago I played in the opening game of the Bay Area Derby Girls 2008 Roller Derby season. My team (the Oakland Outlaws) beat the Richmond Wrecking Belles, the 2007 (previously) undefeated champions! It was good to get back in the game.
Our next game is April 26th and in Oakland. I'll post more details when tickets go on sale. This will be my last game (again) with the Bay Area Derby Girls as I'll be moving back to Seattle in May!
This weekend the BAD girls are co-hosting The Big One, a California Flat Track Roller Derby Championship in Davis, California. It will be two days of California's best derby leagues competing against each other in a battle for the championship title. I won't be skating in the tournament, but I'll be announcing both days. If you love derby, tournaments are an excellent way to get your fill in a short period of time. Tickets are available online, check the website for the schedule.
This is the last game of the season in the Bay Area! The Championship game is between Bay Area Derby Girls so-far undefeated Richmond Wrecking Belles and San Francisco Shevil Dead. Buy tickets online or from me in person.
The Bay Area Derby Girls are always on the lookout for new local sponsors for the league. If you're interested in advertising in the Championship Bout game program (we have spots available from $25 and up) please contact me! Other sponsorship opportunities are available as well.
I spent several hours on Saturday at Fast Girl Skates trying on boots for new skates. It's fun to have a sales person talk to you about your pain tolerance as a means for deciding what to buy, how small to go. "Be prepared for your toe nails to fall off at the end of the season." This is true dedication.
I've been happily skating in my first Carrera speed skates, purchased 4 years ago, because I didn't want to go through breaking in another boot. However, since I started skating again they no longer feel comfy, but more like clown shoes. I want skates that fit like a glove, and since leather stretches, I've got to be prepared to go through some pain. If it makes me faster, I'm willing to endure.
Henry's daughter Sophia has started skating with the Tootsy Rollers - a pee wee roller derby league in Seattle. Instead of contact blocking their goal is to grab flags off the jammer's waist. I'm bummed I haven't seen her skate yet, but someone took this video at a recent practice (Sophia's the girl with the green pants in back).
The Tootsy Rollers are having their debut bout on Dec 2nd at Bellevue Skate King. They'll be playing at halftime for the Seattle Derby Brats game. The Derby Brats are a jr league made up of jr high school girls.
Mav Tv - "TV For Men By Men" is airing full footage of championship games in their regular programming. This is such an exciting time to be involved in the sport! I'm also looking forward to a full return back to the game starting next season. I'm sure I'll be posting more news here as I get back up to speed.
